“Hardstand Construction using DUX W155 Geotextile : The project involved 500LM of the access road and 13500m2 of permanent hardstand to accommodate heavy plant, equipment and materials commencing in April 2021. Apart from the first week of work we experienced rain nearly every week and this then totalled by the end of winter and completion one of the wettest winters in 60 years.

We managed to get most of the unsuitable overburden stripped to stockpile. Commencing the cut to fill of the underlaying variable water sensitive clays we started to experience wet weather. While we managed this by keeping compaction of all fill up to speed as it was been placed we still had issues with the quality of the material been placed achieving suitable compaction.

Once we had the main cut to fill bench completed we had to leave the site idle for period due to intense wet weather but to also plan the next part of the works including reaching out to SGS for advice on improving the completion of this hard stand and access road with certainty of the quality we desired due mainly to the lower the expected performance of the natural clays.

SGS provided this advice and recommended an inexpensive product to provide the quality on completion we were searching for. In addition the advice provided , 300mm base layer(sourced locally) with 150mm capping layer of 40mm class 2 proved fruitful both commercially and for quality.

Some stat’s since completing in early July 21:

• Multiple OSOM loads up to GVM of 120 tonne have traversed the access road and hardstand;
• 100 tonne Crawler crane has worked and moved around the pad effortlessly;
• We have had in excess 100 semi loads delivered to this site to date since
  completion;
• No softies or pavement failures to date which we believe is a result of the product
  and advice provided by SGS.

“Working with Southern Geosynthetics Supplies has been a game-changer for our projects. As one of Melbourne's most respected builders, we take pride in the quality of our work. During the construction of a new plant for DENSO at National Blvd, Campbellfield, we chose the W155 woven geotextile from SGS to stabilise our access roads and hardstand areas. The results were remarkable.

In areas where we applied W155, the roads effortlessly supported heavy 100-tonne cranes without any issues, while untreated sections rutted significantly, with depths reaching up to 300mm in the challenging basaltic clays typical of Melbourne's north.

At just $0.70 per square metre, using W155 was an obvious choice. I truly don’t understand why all roads aren’t constructed with this product. Thank you, SGS, for providing such an effective solution!”

“Our recent project reconstructing the tourist access road to Churchill Island was both challenging and rewarding, thanks to the innovative solutions provided by Southern Geosynthetics Supplies.

The access road, which connects Churchill Island to Phillip Island, faces significant challenges due to king tides that inundate the low-lying roadway. To address these difficult conditions, we collaborated with consultant Bill Ramsay of M.J. Consulting Engineers to design a permanent, all-weather roadway.

We selected the DUX 80kN/m woven geotextile for its superior strength and hydraulic performance, which was crucial for bridging over the extremely soft subgrade material. The initial stabilising layer and drainage blanket consisted of 500mm of 100mm maximum size rock rubble, topped with DUX to create an effective separation layer. Finally, we placed a 200mm thick layer of Class 3, 20mm crushed rock on top.

The construction was carried out by Goldsmith Constructions in August 2000, utilising 3,840 square metres of 80kN/m DUX and 4,200 square metres of DUX 25kN/m. Since the project's completion, the road has successfully withstood testing by king tides, proving the effectiveness of our chosen materials.

I can confidently say that the solutions provided by SGS were integral to the success of this project, allowing us to create a durable and reliable roadway that stands up to nature's challenges.”

“At Hutchinson Builders, we strive to deliver high-quality results in all our projects, and our recent work at the Plumbing Industry Training Centre in Narre Warren was no exception. For this project, we chose the Cipatex PVC geomembrane to line a large raingarden, and it proved to be an outstanding choice.

The 0.75mm PVC Cipatex not only provided excellent durability but also featured a panel size of 10.8m wide, allowing us to cover the area in one piece. This significantly minimised the need for on-site seaming, which is a considerable advantage in terms of both time and efficiency.

Additionally, the flexibility and toughness of the PVC made it easy to follow the shaped profile of the raingarden, ensuring a secure and reliable lining. We were highly impressed with the performance of Cipatex and would recommend it for any civil applications requiring a dependable geomembrane solution.
