W155 woven geotextile provides effective, low-cost stabilisation

Over the last few years, at Danny O’Brien’s training track at Connewarre, manager James Dalton has overseen the construction of some 1700m of turf track and also 500m of sand track. The sand track is used to build up the horses leg strength and the turf track is used close to race day to get the horses toughened to racetrack conditions.

DUX W155 woven geotextile has been used as a stabilising layer for both tracks.

Construction of the sand track comprises a 100mm thick layer of 20mm NDCR (non descript crushed rock) followed by the W155 and then a 100mm clayey-sand layer. The geotextile provides strength and ensures the sand topping does not intermix with the crushed rock base. Laser leveling ensures a good cross-fall over the track to ensure rapid stormwater surface drainage.
